South Korean Artist Kim Byung-ho's "Symmetrical Garden" Makes Its South China Debut, Metal Sculptures Interpret the Beauty of Order
Time : Apr 03 2026

On March 28, the 2nd K11 ECOAST Coastal Cultural Festival officially kicked off at the Shenzhen K11 HACC Cultural Space. Concurrently, the solo exhibition "Symmetrical Garden" by renowned South Korean sculptor and installation artist Kim Byung-ho opened, marking his first personal exhibition in South China. As the opening highlight of the cultural festival, this exhibition features more than 30 artworks spanning Kim Byung-ho's 20-year creative career. With metal as the core material, he constructs a unique artistic language through mechanical aesthetics and geometric structures, which echoes Shenzhen's technological innovation temperament.

At the exhibition, from the early 1998 paper screen-printing work "Twenty-Six Lines" to the 2024 new work "323 Thorns", each work breaks away from the inertial expression of natural organic forms. Based on industrial materials such as stainless steel and aluminum, it builds an aesthetic realm of artificial order through vertical and horizontal axes, repeated geometric modules and precision mechanical systems. Among them, "323 Thorns" uses an aluminum base to carry 323 brass spines, and its detachable structure implies "the fragility of civilized order"; "Two Hundred and Sixty-Four Tears" transforms emotional symbols into industrial modules, and the faint light refracted by the glass coating breaks the stereotype that "metal has no emotion". Some works show dynamic balance changes driven by motors, allowing the cold metal to convey delicate emotional tension.

When sharing his creative philosophy, Kim Byung-ho said that art is the visual transformation of human consensus on order. This exhibition, with art as the link, builds a bridge between South Korean contemporary art and Shenzhen's urban culture. It is reported that this exhibition will serve as the core activity of the 2nd K11 ECOAST Coastal Cultural Festival, bringing immersive art experiences to citizens with a series of international art activities.
